      In my experience the reduced heap fragmentation in long-running, multi-threaded, glibc-based Linux processes is jemalloc's greatest benefit. Native Node.js modules using the libuv threadpool and worker threads would be good examples of where it might help some users some of the time.

      The ability to inject jemalloc via LD_PRELOAD on Linux already provides a runtime integration on the platform it benefits most, from which one could infer it doesn't need to live in Node.js itself. Perhaps an addition to the documentation about how to do this would be appropriate?

      https://github.com/nodejs/node/issues/21973#issuecomment-505123883

        The reason we've never done this so far is that it introduces incompatibilities between node and add-ons.

        A pointer allocated in A can't be freed from B unless A and B use the same allocator. If node is linked against jemalloc and an add-on against libc, things go boom.

        Likewise, even when an add-on picks up the allocator from the node binary but is linked against a library that doesn't: boom!

        That means this PR is only useful in custom builds and even then only with restrictions. The help options should mention that.

        Quelle: https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/17007

        So einfach ist es also nicht. Insbesondere nicht für ein Projekt, das so 'zerklüftet' ist wie der ioBroker.

          Ev. sollte iob diag solche Manipulationen (LD_PRELOAD etc) loggen damit man bei einer allfälligen Fehlersuche nicht fälchlicher Weise von einen normalen System ausgeht.

            Da gibt es nur mehrere Möglichkeiten das zu versuchem dem nodejs mitzugeben. (Von denen übrigens auf meinem Testsystem keine richtig funktioniert hat).
            Aber ob der js-controller mit jemalloc gelinkt ist kann man überprüfen.
            Als Notiz an mich:

            NEW_PID=$(pgrep -f "iobroker.js-controller")
            sudo cat /proc/$NEW_PID/maps | grep jemalloc

              @rscsb Ich habe 8 GB RAM und 4 GB Swap. IOB läuft nativ auf einem "Odroid M1" mit Debian 13 (Trixie).

                      Das hast nichts mit glibc und dem Problem hier zu tun. Die meinsten Adapter laden "binäre Dinge", linken aber nicht statisch geben irgendwelche Libraries.

                      Man solle ioBroker ja nicoht geben jemalloc linken, sonder LD_PRELOAD setzen bevor man iob startet:

                      Bei einer nativen Installation von iob steht das in systemd. also würde das in etwa so ausswehen:

                      Environment=LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libjemalloc.so.2
                      ExecStart=node <pfad zu js-controller>

                        Und genau das habe ich gestern versucht. Auf meinem System wurde das LD_PRELOAD eben NICHT weitervererbt und der js-controller verwendete weiterhin den Standard und nicht jemalloc.

                          ioBroker tut gut daran node.js die offiziell von node ausgelieferten Versionen zu verwenden - ohne etwas zu verbiegen.

                          Offensichtlich ja nicht, wie man hier sieht. Dann haben halt viele User, die der der offiziellen Empfehlung node 24 zu nutzen, verlohren.

                            Es gibt knapp 6000 Installationen mit node24.
                            Wenn es solch ein grundlegendes Problem wäre würde es mehr Feedback geben.

                            Das sind bisher nur Einzelfälle.

                              Es gibt knapp 6000 Installationen mit node24.
                              Wenn es solch ein grundlegendes Problem wäre würde es mehr Feedback geben.

                              Das sind bisher nur Einzelfälle.
                              Mein individuelles Setup ist z. B. komplett unauffällig:

                                  Hi,
                                  ich frage mich immer noch woran es dann bei mir hängt wenn ich auf 24 gehe ? Habe es heute nochmal getestet, aber keine Besserung auch mit dem neuen js-controller.

                                  Bleibt dann nur neue Hardware die Lösung ?

                                      Ich habe eigentlich oben schon alles erwähnt, hier die Zusammenfassung.

                                      System: Raspberry Pi 4 (4 GB), ioBroker mit ~19 Adapter-Instanzen als eigene Prozesse, Objects/States als jsonl, Swap = zram (2 GB, Standard), swappiness 60. Gemessen wird memRss des js-controllers (system.host.*) per Skript alle 10-30 Minuten, dazu Gesamt-RAM und die Werte der einzelnen Adapter.

                                      Beobachtung: Unter Node 24 liegt der RSS des js-controllers dauerhaft höher als unter Node 22. Das tägliche Repository-Update (ca. 13:21 Uhr, im Admin auch manuell auslösbar) lässt ihn zusätzlich springen. Der JS-Heap bleibt dabei konstant, der Zuwachs liegt außerhalb davon.

                                      Node 22.23.3 Node 24.21.0 (js-controller 7.2.2) Node 24.22.0 (js-controller 7.2.5)
                                      RSS im Normalbetrieb 435-490 MB ~720-750 MB ~705 MB
                                      RSS nach Repository-Update kein Sprung (mehrere Updates beobachtet) Spitze 1159 MB, danach Plateau ~1025 MB Spitze 1422 MB, danach Plateau ~1210 MB
                                      HeapUsed ~215 MB ~143-149 MB ~143 MB
                                      MemAvail 1100-1500 MB bis 354 MB bis 285 MB
                                      Swap belegt 12-300 MB bis ~1,5 GB (73 %) ~420-600 MB

                                      Nach dem Wechsel zurück auf Node 22.23.3 lag der js-controller direkt wieder bei ~373 MB RSS und 1493 MB verfügbarem RAM.

                                      Fazit: Gleiche Hardware, gleiche Adapter, gleiche Konfiguration, nur die Node-Version unterscheidet sich. Das passt zu den V8-Änderungen in Node 24, die in nodejs/node#63863 und #61967 beschrieben sind. Auf RAM-knappen Systemen wie dem Pi 4 mit 4 GB ist der Mehrverbrauch deutlich spürbar, ich bleibe deshalb vorerst bei Node 22.
